Poland Rocked By Air Tragedy
Poland is recovering from one of the blackest weeks in its post-communist history after the air tragedy of April 12th.
96 people died on the doomed flight to Smolensk, Russia. The delegation was due to commemorate the 1940 Soviet massacre of the Polish elite at Katyn in 1940. 86 leaders of key Polish institutions perished last week, among them the the President and the First Lady, the president of the National Bank, the president of the Institute of National Remembrance, the president of the Polish Bar Council, the president of Poland's Olympic Committee, to name but a few.
The presidential couple were laid to rest on Sunday 18th in Krakow. However, funerals will continue over the coming week. Matters were complicated by Iceland's volcanic eruption, which has wreaked havoc with air traffic across Europe.
