Poland's Tough Times at the Euro

Poland's first time in the UEFA Euro 2008 Championships has resulted in a shaky start, as their first match ended in defeat. In a sort of deja vu from the World Cup two years ago, Poland lost to Germany 0-2, though ironically enough, both German goals were scored by a Polish-born player, Lukas Podolski. Poland's second match began in a much more hopeful atmosphere, as co-hosts Austria, despite playing on their home turf, were thought to be one of the weakest teams of the tournament. However, despite holding the lead for most of the match after Brazilian-born Roger Guerreiro scored a goal in the first half, an unfortunate stoppage-time penalty allowed Austria to tie the score in literally the last minute.

After a disappointing start, Poland has one more game - and potentially one more chance to make it to the group finals. However, to do so they will have to beat a very strong Croatian team, who has already managed to beat Germany and is leading with 6 points. Germany follows with 3, and Poland and Austria are tied for last place with one point each.

Poland will play Croatia on the 16th of June at 8:45 pm.
